Subseries 1.1, Breath, Eyes, Memory, includes a photocopy of “The Short Road Home” (an early version of Breath, Eyes, Memory), photocopies of press releases and reviews for Breath, Eyes, Memory, and a working copy of A Rain of Daffodils (an early version of Breath, Eyes, Memory) written in 1993. Published in 1994, Breath, Eyes, Memory is Edwidge Danticat’s debut novel, set against the backdrop of the U.S.’s second occupation of Haiti. It is a coming-of-age story that follows a young Haitian girl who migrates to Brooklyn, New York to reunite with her estranged mother. This novel addresses themes of sexual and gendered violence as it relates to female sexuality.
