Copies of Brother, I'm Dying, 2007 - 2008
Scope and Contents
Subseries 1.9, Brother, I'm Dying, includes uncorrected proofs, manuscripts with editor’s notes, scrapbooks with notes and primary sources, notes, research materials and correspondence, family medical records, reviews, and notes on public appearances. Published in 2007, Brother, I'm Dying is Danticat’s first major non-fiction work. The memoir weaves together the narrative of Edwidge’s first pregnancy with the story of two pivotal male figures in her life: her Uncle Joseph Dantica, who raised her in Haiti, and her father, Andre, who took over her upbringing in the US. The memoir delves into the bond between the brothers, their relationships with Edwidge, and their impact on each other’s lives. Danticat documents her father's health complications and decline as well as the tragic death of Joseph Dantica in a US detention camp while he awaits his political asylum trial.
