Series Scope and Content Summary

From the Series:

Series 3 comprises 124 audiocassettes, video tapes, and floppy discs that contain recorded interviews with Black, Latine, Asian, and Muslim Barnard students and alumni. These interviews were conducted in the 1990s for a series of promotional and educational videotapes. The project was initiated by Dorothy Denburg, Dean of the College, who sought to use the videos “to educate students, faculty, and staff about the experiences of students of color” (Barnard Magazine, Spring 2005). Several faculty members and administrators collaborated on the project, including Vivian Taylor, Associate Dean of Studies, and Christina Kuan Tsu, Assistant Dean of Studies. This series includes audio and video of the full uncut interviews with students and alumni of color, as well as the final edited videos that were produced and distributed. Additionally, typed transcripts for the interviews with Latine students are available. The final videotapes include "About Face," which highlights Asian students’ experiences; "Indivisible," which highlights Black students’ experiences; and "Óyeme (Hear Me)," which highlights Latine students’ experiences. Interviews were conducted with Muslim students; however, a final video was never produced.

A small amount of materials in this series are unrelated to the interview projects or their contents are unknown.
