Board of Trustees meeting minutes, 1889 - 2019

 Series
Identifier: Series 1

Scope and Contents

This series primarily contains meeting minutes, which typically include a list of trustees in attendance, agendas, committee reports, resolutions passed based on committee recommendations, and descriptions of discussions that took place at the meeting. The President of the College, who is considered an ex-officio trustee, also typically gives a report on wider campus news and issues currently demanding the administration’s attention. Occasionally, meeting minutes also include other materials that were potentially under discussion such as presentation slides, news articles, promotional materials from other Barnard offices, publications, and reports from outside organizations. Minutes are typically organized according to the order in which business was discussed during each meeting. Meetings of the Executive Committee were typically held in private either before or after the regular session of each meeting. There are digital versions of some minutes from the late 1990s and early 2000s, but these are mostly draft minutes rather than the finalized, approved versions.

Arrangement

This series is arranged into two subseries. Subseries 1.1 contains regular Board meeting minutes, which are inclusive of all discussions and committee reports given during the general session of each meeting. Beginning in the late 1970s, minutes from Executive Committee sessions were also included into the regular meeting minutes. Subseries 1.2 contains minutes from Executive Committee sessions only, as well as supporting documents.

The archivists conducted high-level physical rearrangement of digital materials in this series so they could be easily integrated into the existing arrangement of subseries. The digital materials, at the highest directory level, were divided based on whether their informational content pertained to general sessions or Executive Committee sessions. Each group of digital files was then placed into a new folder with a new file name.
