Historical Summary
The Faculty Housing Assistance Task Force was established in 2017 to evaluate and propose strategies for addressing the rising cost and limited availability of housing for Barnard College faculty. Composed of senior administrators and faculty representatives, the task force was charged with reviewing current housing policies, assessing faculty needs, and exploring models from peer institutions to inform the development of a long-term, equitable housing assistance plan. The task force commissioned surveys, gathered comparative data from peer schools, and considered a range of solutions, including rental subsidies, shared equity models, and forgivable loans. Its work also involved reevaluating eligibility criteria, equity implications, and the college’s reliance on Columbia University housing.
