Speak Out/Indwelling, 1981 - 2019
Scope and Contents
Speak Out/Indwelling began in 1982. At the first Speak Out, women testified about their experiences with eating disorders, mother-daughter relationships, body image, racism, class, and discrimination. Gloria Steinem spoke at the 1992 Speak Out. Speak Out was renamed Indwelling, after the Donald Winnicott concept of "indwelling," the idea of having a close and easy relationship between the psyche and the body. For the 25th anniversary of WTCI, Indwelling became a multi-day event that included speak outs, music, spoken word, film, and photography exhibitions.
