This collection contains a petition signed by over 1400 New York City community members, following a meeting of the Association of the Promotion of the Higher Education of Women. The petition advocates for the admission of women into Columbia University courses and lectures. Following this petition, Annie Nathan Meyer began the process of founding Barnard as an affiliated institution to Columbia, for the education of women.
