St. Louis, MO pages from untitled childhood project or journal, undated

 File — Box: 78, Folder: 2
Identifier: Subseries 1.26

Scope and Contents

Pages with writing and drawings by Ntozake depicting eras of Ntozake’s childhood from the perspective of a child, with locations identified by Paul T. Williams, Jr. (brother of Ntozake Shange) and noted on sticky notes. The intended use of or genesis of these pages as well as their date is unknown, although they likely date to before Ntozake's first stroke in 2004. Pages were removed from binder pages and any order was not retained. This folder contains pages depicting the Williams home in St. Louis, MO (and one page that possibly depicts the Trenton, NJ family home); Ntozake's maternal grandmother who stayed with the Williams family when they lived in St. Louis; their street of interesting neighbors (including Chuck Berry and a champion boxer among others); and the negative experiences Ntozake had being bussed to a white school (possibly the Baldwin school) in St. Louis.
