Collection Scope and Content Summary
The collection contains materials that document the history of the Art History Department at Barnard College. Included in this collection are flyers for lectures and film events, invitations to fundraisers, documents about the history of the department, a memorial memo, course information, event recordings, and exam questions. There is some material from the Fine Arts Department which became part of the Art History Department in 1960. Also included are materials documenting exhibitions held in the James Room from 1957-1969. which were organized by Julius Held of the Fine Arts (and later Art History Deparment). These materials include correspondence, loan documentation, exhibition checklists and brochures, programs for openings, and clippings. This collection includes digital event recordings as well.

Abstract
This collection consists of materials from the Barnard College Art History Department.
Collection Arrangement
This collection is arranged chronologically. Additionally, the archivist completed high-level physical rearrangement to allow the digital materials to be easily integrated into a single system of arrangement. The archivist placed the digital documents, at the highest directory level, into a new folder with a new file name.

Acquisition Information
Transferred from the Art History department and from Julius Held. Event recordings transferred from Instructional Media and Technology Services (IMATS) in 2025.

Additions are expected.
Processing History
This collection was processed and the finding aid was written by Amy Lau in October 2015. In August 2025, Martha Tenney processed a digital accural of event recordings. In September 2025, Olivia Newsome intellectually re-arranged this collection and updated the finding aid.

Processing Note
An invitation card, "The Nature of American Art: A Symposium...," was originally in the folder with materials from the Fine Arts Department. It was moved into the folder with all of the other Art History Department materials.
