Historical Summary

The name of this committee has gone through numerous iterations, as shown in its records. The first name was the Committee on Students' Programs from 1923-1949; then the Committee on Programs and Standing from 1950-1960; and finally, in 1968, the current name (the Committee on Programs and Academic Standing) was adopted.

In 1949 the charge of the committee was described as "administering the educational policies of the faculty formulated by the Committee on Instruction. It considers: 1) change of major, 2) courses to be taken in other schools of the university, in summer session or during the Junior Year Abroad. It also considers applications for credit for one-half of an indivisible course, and gives approval for variable point courses" (see Barnard Bulletin, December 15, 1949, page 1). As of 2024, the committee was described as "an appointed faculty committee charged with regularly reviewing educational policy in matters of student programs, credit, and academic standing. The Committee acts on student petitions for exceptions to academic policy."
