Collection Scope and Content Summary

This collection consists of original and duplicate audio recordings of speeches and lectures, forums, conferences, interviews, anniversary celebrations, reunions, inaugurations, degree candidate presentations, concerts at Barnard College from 1936 to 2007. Barnard College presidents that appear in the collection include Virginia Gildersleeve, Millicent McIntosh, Martha Peterson, Rosemary Park, Jacquelyn Mattfeld, and Ellen Futter. Prominent speakers include Elie Wiesel, Atallah Shabazz, Jean Stafford, Bella Abzug, Edwidge Danticat, Thulani Davis, Isabel Allende, and Antonia Novello. There is significant crossover between the reel-to-reels and audiocassettes due to transferring. Archivists incorporated a shelf listing inventory of the reel-to-reels and audiocassettes into the finding aid in 2022; however, this inventory has not been thoroughly checked and may contain errors because of illegible labels, mislabled tapes, and shifted tapes.
The CDs in the collection are Barnard acapella group Bacchantae performances, On Dance lectures, and other lectures given at Barnard College.
The records in the collection are of the song Barnard! Barnard! performed by the Columbia University Choir and recorded in 1964 for the 75th Anniversary of Barnard College. There are also speeches by Dean Gildersleeve and a 1938 Barnard Day radio broadcast.
341 audiocassettes and 6 CDs of presentations from Scholar and Feminist Conferences, 1975-1996, were deaccessioned and moved to the Barnard Center for Research on Women collection, BC13.58, because they fit more appropriately into the scope of that collection.
