This collection consists of film and video recordings related to or produced by Barnard College. Included are recordings of campus events and performances, candid footage of campus life, taped clips of television shows featuring Barnard or people affiliated with Barnard, documentaries related to Barnard or people affiliated with Barnard, and course-related recordings. Formats of recordings include 8mm and 16mm film, VHS tapes, DVDs, DVCAM tapes, DV tapes, MiniDV tapes, and Beta tapes.

Of special interest are early films of campus life and the Greek Games from the 1920s-1940s and recordings of lectures and events featuring prominent visitors, including June Jordan, Alice Walker, Ntozake Shange, Marian Wright Edelman, Betty Friedan, Elie Wiesel, Laurie Anderson, Joan Didion, Ed Koch, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Julian Bond. Of additional interest are recordings of Dance Uptown performances from 1974 through 1991 and the On Dance lecture and panel series from 2000 through 2010. This collection also features recordings of significant campus events, including the Barnard Organization of Soul Sisters Celebration of Black Womanhood, commencements and inaugurations, award ceremonies, and annual theatrical, dance, and musical performances.

This collection is comprised of multiple format-based collections and groupings of moving image materials with various unknown provenances. They are brought together in this collection, BC18 Moving Image collection, to provide ease of access to the bulk of the Archives' Barnard-related and Barnard-produced moving image materials created prior to 2012. Many of the items in this collection were produced by entities at Barnard College, including the departments of Dance, Theatre, and Music; the Barnard Center for Research on Women; and other offices, often in conjunction with the Media Services office. Other recordings, particularly the television clips and documentaries, were produced by entities external to Barnard.
