Historical Summary
The Middle States Health and Wellness Sessions were held over two days, bringing together key areas of student support including Counseling Service, Physical Education (PE), the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program (ASAP), Well Woman, Student Life, and Primary Care. These sessions explored the definition of wellness, integrating aspects of physical, emotional, social, and cultural health. Discussions highlighted the challenges faced by Physical Education, such as resource limitations stemming from the loss of the gym, pool, and track, and the department's efforts to manage a backlog of 180 students needing to complete the PE requirement. Central to conversations surrounding Health Services and Counseling was the analysis of their effectiveness and the push for a systemic model that examines how oppressive systems affect student access to support. A major focus across the session was the new "Feel Well Do Well" program, which aimed to enhance social connectedness, combat loneliness, and integrate wellness across the entire campus by training various staff members, including Dining Room Staff and Front Desk Attendants. Additionally, the sessions identified specific institutional challenges, such as the difficulty in meeting high demand for counseling services and the finding that the college had significantly more students reporting eating concerns compared to the national average. Materials are from January 29 and 30, 2020.
