This collection consists of clippings, educational documents, ephemera, and photographs and photograph albums from the life of Margaret Wadds, Barnard class of 1931. The collection is primarily made up of photographs and albums documenting Margaret Wadds’s travels, as well as snapshot photography and older photographs and clippings from her childhood as a semi-professional dancer.

Biography

Margaret L. Wadds attended Barnard College from 1927 until 1931 and studied Spanish and Latin. She received a fellowship from Barnard to study at the Centro des Estudios Historicos in Madrid, Spain after graduation.

In her youth, Margaret was a great dancer and performed on many stages, semi-professionally. Photographs indicate that she continued to dance later in life, and it is possible that she danced with the Norwegian Folk Dance Society of New York.

Abstract

The collection consists of photographs, clippings, and educational documents from the life of Margaret Wadds, Barnard class of 1931. It consists primarily of travel and snapshot photography, as well as older photographs and clippings from her childhood and early life.

Collection Arrangement

The collection is divided into five series.

Series 1: Barnard
This series includes materials pertaining to Margaret Wadds’s time at Barnard. Such materials include her diploma from Barnard, programs from Greek Games in which she participated, a letter regarding her Spanish fellowship, and an alumnae newsletter.

Series 2: Other Educational Materials
This series includes materials from other educational periods in Margaret Wadds’s life such as her high school diploma and materials from the Centro des Estudios Historicos.

Series 3: Clippings
This series includes newspaper clippings with mentions of Margaret Wadds for dancing and academic achievements.

Series 4: Photographs and Photograph Albums
In this series there are a number of photographs (2 folders) of Margaret Wadds, as well as photographs of unidentified individuals (2 folders). There are also photographs of people who are identified, but whose relationship to Margaret Wadds is not discernable. Additionally, there are 2 folders of photographs taken throughout Margaret Wadds’s travels. This series also includes 3 photo albums, one of which is separated into two folders.

Series 5: Ephemera
This series includes travel materials such as postcards and a photo book from the Yucatan, as well as a program from the Norwegian Folk Dance Society of New York’s Fifteenth Anniversary celebration. Wadds's connection to the Norwegian Folk Dance Society of New York is unclear, though it is possible that she was a member and there are a number of photographs that show her dancing throughout her life.
